Margaret’s previous work was abstract oil painting and printing on paper, using images of elephants and old lace as her source material, subsequently; she became enchanted when she encountered what was to become known to her, as ‘the elephant bar’ in Amsterdam. She says, “A mural of two elephants adorned the wall of this bar and a Turkish lantern gave off a beautiful lace pattern across the whole of this area, this serendipity experience haunted me when I returned to London and started me on a journey which I still find fascinating today”.
The bar was full of people the joint was Buzzing!!! which made me feel quite isolated, not connected somehow and quite vulnerable.
There are three paintings bolted together - sometimes in a tryptic the painting are not bolted but hang together as three, quietly relating to one another - This image is trying to portray that feeling of vulnerability when you enter a crowded space - the bar was buzzing yet they all seemed to all look to the door as I entered - I felt a sense fragility.
12"x12" 2012
mixed media on canvas
I have used dark moody shades to capture the atmosphere of the bar, There was a lot going on and it made such an impression on me, even to this day. See text ‘about the work’.
'Interior Space' - 12” x 12 “ painting on canvas
Again, using layers of lace to create depth-
I was fascinated by the different archetypes interacting within the interior space.
Painting on canvas using oil/acrylic/charcoal
30" x 40"
This work was created just after my mother died - caring for her on and off for 4/5 years drained me and taught me the power of the matriarch.
This comes up from one of my drawings - then a painting and now also a print. Placed on a chessboard - moving and manipulating around 'life' can be quite a challenge - Looking and playing with the surreal - insomuch as we are sometimes all looking for perfection but perfection comes in many guises and is sometimes transparent and allusive leaving us exposed.
The bar was full of people the joint was Buzzing!!! which made me feel quite isolated, not connected somehow very vulnerable.
